Decks
A deck should be somewhere you cook, sit and lose an afternoon — not a platform you keep an eye on.
01Overview
Everything above the framing is what people look at. Everything below it is what decides whether the deck is still solid in fifteen years. We build both with the same attention: proper footings, correctly sized joists and beams, and hardware rated for the conditions.
We work in pressure-treated lumber, redwood and low-maintenance composite like Trex and Azek, and we build for a climate that swings between damp winters and dry sun. Every joist, beam and railing meets local code for safety.
We also take on the decks that already exist — reinforcing failing framing, replacing rotted boards, rebuilding stairs and landings, or tearing a tired deck out and starting over.

Framing built to outlast the boards
Deck boards can be replaced. Framing can't, easily — so the joists, beams, posts and connections get done right the first time.
Composite or wood, honestly compared
Composite costs more up front and almost nothing after. Wood costs less and wants attention every couple of years. We'll tell you which fits how you actually maintain things.
No splinters, no soft spots

Design the footprint
We look at how you'd use the space — dining, lounging, traffic to the yard — and size the deck to it.

Footings and framing
Footings go in at proper depth, then posts, beams and joists to code.

Decking and railings
Boards are laid with consistent gapping, then railings, stairs and fascia.

Finish
Wood gets stained or sealed; composite gets a final clean and inspection.

Composite or pressure-treated wood?
Composite (Trex, Azek and similar) doesn't need sanding or staining and holds color, which suits people who don't want annual upkeep. Pressure-treated and redwood cost less and look warmer, but want cleaning and re-sealing every year or two.
Can you save my existing deck?
Often. If the posts and beams are sound, we can replace joists, boards and railings over the existing structure. If the framing is compromised, rebuilding is safer and usually cheaper than chasing repairs.
How do I know my deck is unsafe?
Soft or spongy boards, a railing that moves when you lean on it, rust or gaps at the ledger where the deck meets the house, and visible rot at post bases. The ledger connection is the one that causes real failures.
Do decks need a permit?
In most Bay Area cities, decks above a certain height or attached to the house do. We'll tell you what applies in your city as part of the estimate.
