Most Bay Area yards aren't flat. That's a design problem before it's a planting problem.
01Overview
Before a shovel hits the dirt we look at soil, sunlight and drainage. On a sloped lot — which describes a good share of the East Bay — where the water goes is the single decision that everything else depends on.
From there we build: paver, flagstone and concrete patios and walkways; retaining walls that stop erosion or terrace a hillside into usable space; synthetic turf; fences and pergolas; and planting and garden maintenance to finish it.
We also do the ordinary work that keeps a property sharp — crisp lawn edging, seasonal cleanups, and full backyard resets.

Can you make a steep backyard usable?
That's most of what retaining walls are for. Terracing a slope into two or three level tiers turns unusable hillside into patio, planting beds or lawn.
Is synthetic turf worth it here?
For yards with heavy dog traffic, deep shade where grass won't fill in, or anyone who wants to stop watering, it holds up well. It needs proper base and drainage underneath to stay firm.
Pavers or poured concrete for a patio?
Pavers handle ground movement better and individual units can be lifted and reset. Poured concrete gives a cleaner, more continuous surface. Both work — the slope and the look you want usually decide it.
Do you handle drainage problems?
Yes. Standing water and runoff against the house get addressed through grading and hardscape design as part of the project, not as an afterthought.
